About el Born…
In the last ten years or so El Born also know as La Ribera has been transformed into one of the most vibrant and exciting areas of Barcelona with a wealth of trendy and artisan shops as well as some fabulous restaurants and bars. Many designers and artists have based themselves in the area, with new outlets opening up every week.
El Born is an ideal area to stay for a city break, family holiday or romantic getaway. It is close to all of the city’s main tourist attractions and a short walk to the Old Port and beaches of Barceloneta.
The Museu Picasso is located on the bustling Carrer de Montcada and often hosts special exhibitions presenting artworks by Picasso and other artists.
The tree-lined Paseo del Born is the area’s main thoroughfare lined with fabulous shops and restaurants. This leads down to the former iron and glass covered Mercat del Born (once the most famous food market in Barcelona), which has been empty for over thirty years. In 2002 it was to be converted into a library but worked stopped when an underground Roman city was discovered beneath the market foundation.
At the other end of the Paseo del Born is the beautiful Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar where you can often see weddings.
